RDSO: The Indian Railways Technical Authority
The Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO) functions as the sole standards body and technical authority for the Indian Railways system. All materials, equipment, and consumables used in railway infrastructure must be qualified and approved by RDSO before they can be used on railway maintenance projects.

Testing Requirements for RDSO Approval
To qualify for RDSO approval, abrasive wheels must pass the following tests:
1. Burst Speed Test
Wheels are proof-tested at 1.5x the rated maximum operating speed. All wheels must survive this test without fracture or delamination.
2. Cutting Performance Test
Wheels must cut through a standard rail section (60 kg/m UIC rail) within specified time limits while remaining within acceptable temperature ranges.
3. Dimensional Check
All wheels in a batch are checked against dimensional tolerances: diameter (±1.5%), thickness (±0.5mm), bore (±0.15mm), and flatness.
4. Balance Test
Static and dynamic balance must be within defined limits to prevent vibration during operation.
The 710 mm Rail Sleeper Cutting Wheel
Railway sleepers (ties) in modern Indian Railways construction are reinforced concrete structures with embedded high-tensile steel rods (rebar). Cutting them for track replacement requires a wheel that can handle:
