Proper Machine Operation
The lifespan of a cut-off wheel is heavily dependent on the operator.
- Don't Force the Cut: Applying too much pressure won't make the cut faster; it will simply glaze or break the wheel. Let the RPMs do the work.
- Keep it Straight: Cut-off wheels (Type 41) are designed for straight cutting only. Any twisting or side-loading will snap the fiberglass reinforcement.
Workpiece Clamping
Vibration is the enemy of abrasive wheels. Ensure your workpiece is clamped securely as close to the cut line as possible. A vibrating workpiece will chatter against the wheel, causing micro-fractures that drastically reduce wheel life.
Storage Conditions
Bonded abrasives degrade in high humidity. Store wheels flat in a dry, climate-controlled environment to prevent the phenolic resin bond from breaking down before the wheel even hits the grinder.
