Humidity is the Enemy
Most industrial abrasive wheels use phenolic resin bonds. This resin is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Over time, moisture degrades the bond, leading to a loss of strength and performance.
Best Practices for Storage
- Keep them Flat: Store wheels flat on a solid shelf. Storing them upright or leaning them can cause them to warp.
- Climate Control: Store in a dry, well-ventilated room. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations that cause condensation.
- FIFO System: Practice First-In, First-Out. Bonded abrasives expire after 3 years; rotate your stock to ensure older wheels are used first.
- Handle with Care: Never drop a wheel. Even a micro-fracture from a small drop can lead to a wheel burst at 13,000 RPM.
