How to Choose the Right Grinding Wheel for Stainless Steel

The Challenge with Stainless Steel

Grinding stainless steel (INOX) presents unique challenges. Unlike mild steel, stainless steel is heat-sensitive and prone to work hardening. Moreover, using the wrong wheel can introduce iron contaminants, leading to rust on an otherwise corrosion-resistant surface.

Why Iron-Free Wheels Matter

To prevent after-rusting, always use grinding wheels labeled "Iron-Free" or "INOX". These wheels contain less than 0.1% of iron, sulfur, and chlorine. Apidor's Volcano range is specifically formulated for this purpose.

Grit Selection

For heavy stock removal, aluminum oxide or zirconia alumina wheels in 24-36 grit are ideal. If you're blending welds, a finer 60-grit wheel will reduce the time spent in the subsequent polishing stages.

Speed and Pressure

Stainless steel responds best to consistent, moderate pressure. Excessive pressure generates heat, which can warp the metal or cause blue discoloration (heat tint). Let the wheel do the work at its rated operating speed.
